About Us
Welcome to Derryvolgie
Derryvolgie Church is a Church of Ireland parish in Lisburn, but more than that, it’s a place where people, families, and community come together. Whether you’re new to the area, exploring faith for the first time, returning after a break, or simply looking for a welcoming community to belong to - you are very welcome here. We believe church should feel warm, accessible, and rooted in real life. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You don’t need to dress a certain way or know when to sit or stand. You just need to come as you are.
Meet our Rector
Rev. James Boyd has a real passion for helping people grow in their faith and discover the gifts God has placed within them. He believes the church should be relevant, outward-looking, and closely connected to the community it serves.
Originally from Ballymena, James is married to Shirley and they have two daughters, Rebekah and Hannah. Family life is important to him, and that shapes the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere he encourages at Derryvolgie.
Before entering ministry, James studied computer programming at Ulster University and worked in the field for a short time. However, he felt a clear calling towards ministry and began that journey through the Church of Ireland Year Out programme, spending a year supporting churches across Ireland in short-term mission and youth work.
James went on to serve as Youth Ministry Co-ordinator in Moira, where he spent five years developing and delivering parish youth work. He later trained for ordination at the Church of Ireland Theological College in Dublin, before serving in parishes across Down, Dromore, Tyrone, and Belfast.
James joined Derryvolgie in November 2018 and continues to focus on building a church where people feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to play an active part in church and community life.
Faith, Lived Out Together
At the heart of Derryvolgie is a simple, inclusive Christian faith, centred on worship, kindness, and serving others.
Our Sunday services are relaxed and family-friendly, with teaching that connects faith to everyday life – work, parenting, relationships, challenges, and joys. We value thoughtful reflection, honest questions, and a faith that makes sense beyond Sunday morning.
A Church for Families
Families are a huge part of life at Derryvolgie.
From babies and toddlers to teenagers and grandparents, we aim to create a place where all ages feel seen and valued. We run a range of children’s and youth activities, both on Sundays and during the week, designed to be fun, safe, and meaningful.
Many families in our church are juggling busy schedules, school runs, sports clubs, and work – so we understand life can be full-on. Derryvolgie is a place where families can slow down, connect, and grow together.
At the Heart of the Community
Our church building is alive throughout the week, hosting a wide range of community groups, classes, and activities – from parent-and-toddler groups to fitness classes, arts, and youth initiatives.
We’re proud to be a space where the wider Lisburn community gathers, supports one another and builds friendships. For us, church isn’t just something that happens on a Sunday — it’s about being present, involved and outward-looking.
New to Lisburn? You’re Not Alone
If you’ve recently moved to Lisburn, we know how important it is to find places that help you feel settled.
Derryvolgie has long been a place where newcomers quickly become friends. Many of our members once stood exactly where you are now – looking for connection, belonging, and somewhere that feels like home.
We’d love to help you find your feet.

You don’t have to commit to anything.
You don’t have to know anyone.
You don’t have to be sure what you believe.
Just come along, have a coffee, meet some friendly faces, and see if Derryvolgie feels right for you.

Our History

St Columba’s parish was created in 1963 from the adjoining parishes of Lisburn Cathedral, Lambeg and Derriaghy. The first Rector was the Rev. (now Canon) Bertram Livingston, previously rector in charge of five churches in Co. Monaghan. When he came to Lisburn, there was neither a church, nor land available for it. His home was used for Sunday School and a Bible Class and in January 1964, Sunday services and Sunday School commenced in a vacant shop on the Moss Road. In May of that year, a hut was built by parishioners to be used until a church could be built to cater for the needs of people moving into the area of Derriaghy, Lambeg and Lisburn.
Plans were prepared, and work commenced on the new church/hall in October 1965. The foundation stone was laid on 11th December 1965 by Sir Ivan Ewart. The new building was dedicated by the Bishop of Connor, the Rt. Rev. R. C. H. Elliott, on 10th September 1966. Also taking part were the Dean of Belfast, the Very Rev. C. I. Peacocke, and the Archdeacon of Connor, the Ven. John Mercer. The sermon was preached by the Ven. W. L. M. Giff, Archdeacon of Meath. The cost of the new building with furnishings was £23,500. The parishioners contributed £6,500, and the Connor Church Extension Fund gave £7,000. A loan of £10,000 was obtained from the R.C.B. The pulpit and prayer desk came from a church in Eire, which had been closed, and a number of gifts were presented by parishioners.
St. Columba’s achieved full parish status in January 1978. In 1979 Canon Livingston was succeeded by the late Canon Noel Wilkinson, who continued the work of expansion of the parish and its activities into the wider community. Canon Wilkinson was well respected as a talented musician, particularly in church circles. During his Incumbency, parishioner Jack Hassard was commissioned Diocesan Reader on 20th November 1980. On Canon Wilkinson’s retirement, Rev. Chris Pollock was appointed Rector on 15th October 1993. Rev. Donna Quigley, was instituted on All Saints Day, 1st November 2004. Dorothy Jackson was commissioned Parish Reader on Sunday 4th June 2006. Emma Fleming was commissioned Parish Reader on Sunday 17th May 2009. Interim Ministers, Rev. John Dinnen and Rev. Don Gamble from January 2010. Stephen McElhinney was appointed as priest-in-charge in September 2011 and later commissioned as rector in February 2015. His ministry laid the foundation for a season of new growth in the parish. Our current rector Rev. James Boyd was instituted on 13th November 2018 and continues to lead the parish in its mission and ministry.
